Stop Scrolling Start Seeking

In this week’s Gospel & Gradebooks episode, Jamie and Timm get real about social media habits and spiritual priorities. The guys share their own weekly screen-time reports, dig into Scripture about idolatry and distraction, and challenge men to put the Word before the world.

Scrolling, Not Seeking: Choosing Scripture Over Screen Time

Let’s be honest—most of us grab our phones before we even talk to God.
We wake up, reach for that glowing screen, and within seconds, we’re knee-deep in notifications, reels, and updates. But before we know it, we’ve given our first moments—and our focus—to everything but the One who gave us breath.

In this episode of the Gospel & Gradebooks Podcast, Jamie and Timm open up about the tension between scrolling and seeking. They compare their own screen-time reports, talk through the spiritual dangers of distraction, and challenge all of us to examine how our digital habits reveal our devotion.

The Distraction Dilemma

Social media isn’t evil—it’s powerful. It’s designed to keep our attention, and it’s doing a great job.
But when that attention becomes obsession, we start to trade connection with God for connection with content.

Jamie and Timm walk through Scripture that calls this what it really is—idolatry. When something consistently comes before God, whether it’s our job, our phone, or even our hobbies, it’s taken His place.

“You shall have no other gods before Me.” — Exodus 20:3

It’s not about deleting every app. It’s about deciding who gets your attention first.

Practical Steps to Refocus

This episode isn’t just conviction—it’s action. Jamie and Timm share a 7-Day Challenge to help men take control of their time and get back into God’s Word:

  • Open your Bible before you open your phone. Let God’s voice be the first one you hear each day.

  • Take a full day off social media this week. Saturday’s a great place to start.

  • Replace scrolling with Scripture. Every time you reach for your phone, reach for your Bible instead.

  • Follow what feeds your faith. Unfollow the noise and start seeking truth.

Little shifts like these can transform your mornings—and your mindset.

The Heart Behind the Habit

Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.”
That’s the call here—not shame, but seek.

We can’t expect to grow closer to God if we’re constantly distracted by the world. When we start our day seeking Him instead of scrolling through chaos, we find peace that no post can give.

It’s not about phone guilt—it’s about spiritual growth.

The Challenge

For the next seven days, flip your routine.

Wednesday- Seek First

- Before touching your phone in the morning, open your Bible and read at least one verse.

Thursday- Turn My Eyes

- Set a "Seek First" phone wallpaper or alarm reminder to stop scrolling and start seeking.

Friday- Silence The Noise

- Turn on Do Not Disturb or Focus Mode for 15 minutes and spend it in prayer or quiet reading.

Saturday- Sabbath Your Screen

- Take one full day off social media. Use that time for worship, serving, scripture, or rest.

Sunday- The Word over the world

- Replace one 20 minute scroll session with 20 minutes in Proverbs or a short Bible podcast (how about Gospel & Gradebooks??)

Monday- Model It

- Let your family or coworkers catch you in the Word. Read a verse aloud or share something that stands out to you.

Tuesday- Serve

- Serve someone today. Pack or sponsor Operation Christmas Child, pray with a friend, or meet a practical need.
