Real Men Worship: Why Silence Isn’t Strength

Let’s be honest—most men don’t like to sing in public.
We’ll yell at football games until our voices crack, but when the worship leader starts the first verse of “Graves Into Gardens,” we suddenly turn into statues. Arms folded. Eyes down. Lips sealed.

In this episode of the Gospel & Gradebooks Podcast, Jamie and Timm sit down with their good friend Timotheus Treadwell, an SRO supervisor and worship leader at The City Church in Opelika, Alabama, to talk about what it means for men to truly worship. Together, they share funny stories from the stage, moments of conviction, and a challenge to every man who’s ever stood silent in the presence of God.

The Real Meaning of Worship

Worship isn’t about talent—it’s about surrender.
Treadwell reminds us that leading worship isn’t just playing music; it’s leading people to an encounter with God. And for men, that starts with humility. Real strength isn’t silence—it’s submission.

When we lift our hands or raise our voices, we’re not putting on a show; we’re admitting that we need God more than we need control. That’s not weakness. That’s power.

Breaking the “Cool Guy” Barrier

Jamie and Timm get real about why so many men hold back. Pride. Fear. Worry about what others might think. But as Treadwell points out, the same men who stay quiet in church will scream from the stands on Friday night.

It’s not that we can’t express passion—it’s that we’ve misplaced it.
True masculinity isn’t about being stoic; it’s about being bold enough to express our faith. Worship is warfare, and the enemy wins when men stay silent.

Leading by Example

Every man is a worship leader—whether you’re on stage or standing next to your kids in the pew.
When your son sees you singing, when your daughter sees your hands raised, when your wife sees you fully engaged, it tells your family that God is worth it all. That’s leadership. That’s legacy.

As Treadwell says, “The church needs men who will worship like they mean it.”

The Challenge

This week, take one step of boldness in worship.
Sing. Clap. Raise your hands. Kneel. Whatever it looks like—just do something that declares your heart belongs to God. Because real men don’t worship quietly—they worship completely.
