Surviving the First Week of School with Faith

The first week of school rarely follows the script. Jamie and Timm share stories, tips, and encouragement for teachers embracing the chaos with faith.

sHOW nOTES

As teachers, we spend countless hours meticulously planning and preparing for the start of a new school year. From organizing our classrooms to crafting detailed lesson plans, we strive to ensure everything is in order and ready to go for that crucial first week back with students. But the reality is, no matter how much we plan, that first week rarely ever goes exactly as we envision.

In this episode of the Gospel and Gradebooks podcast, hosts Jamie and Timm dive headfirst into the chaos and curve balls that often come with the beginning of a new school year. From broken copiers and missing keys to unexpected schedule changes and technology failures, they share real-life stories and frustrations that will have every educator nodding their head in solidarity.

But amidst the madness, Jamie and Timm also offer a crucial reminder: God is still in control, even when our carefully laid plans go awry. Through biblical wisdom from Proverbs, James, Romans and more, they encourage listeners to approach the start of the school year with flexibility, grace and an unwavering trust that the Lord is guiding their steps.

When Things Don't Go as Planned

As Jamie and Timm discuss, the first week of school is rife with potential pitfalls and unexpected challenges. From simple logistical issues like missing keys or malfunctioning technology, to more complex problems like last-minute schedule changes or being asked to teach an entirely new class, it's almost guaranteed that something won't go according to plan.

One teacher shared a story of a brand new, highly organized educator who had her classroom meticulously arranged, only to have a massive new smartboard installed that left her scrambling to find a place for it. Another recounted a tale of a high school administrator who, on his very first day as a freshman, took a tumble down the main staircase in front of the entire student body.

And as Jamie points out, it's not just teachers and administrators who face these first-week curveballs - students and parents experience their fair share as well. He recalls a vivid memory from his own childhood, when he was dropped off at the wrong side of the house on the first day of kindergarten, only to take a tumble into a six-foot ditch as his mortified mother watched helplessly.

  • Broken or malfunctioning technology (e.g. Wi-Fi outages, copier issues, missing Chromebooks)
  • Logistical problems (e.g. missing keys, incorrect student schedules, bus delays)
  • Unexpected changes (e.g. last-minute room relocations, new class assignments)
  • Student and parent challenges (e.g. getting to the wrong bus stop, missing the bus entirely)

The list goes on, but the common thread is clear: no matter how much we plan, that first week of school is bound to throw us a few curveballs. And as Jamie and Timm emphasize, the key is not to get bogged down in the frustration, but to approach these challenges with patience, flexibility and an unwavering trust in God's sovereignty.

Finding Comfort in God's Plan

Throughout the episode, Jamie and Timm turn to the wisdom of Scripture to provide encouragement and perspective when things don't go as planned. They repeatedly point to Proverbs 16, which reminds us that "To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue" (Proverbs 16:1).

This foundational truth - that our plans and efforts are ultimately subject to God's will - is a crucial reminder when we find ourselves facing unexpected obstacles in the classroom. As Timm notes, "We can plan and act all we want, but God's in control." Even the most "random" events or circumstances are part of His sovereign plan.

The guys also highlight James 4:15, which instructs us to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining a humble, submissive posture before God, acknowledging that our lives and plans are ultimately in His hands.

And in Romans 8:28, we're given the reassurance that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." No matter how chaotic or frustrating the first week may be, we can trust that God is using even the most unexpected circumstances for our good and His glory.

As Timm so eloquently states, "We don't have to be [in control]. God is in complete control of that." By grounding ourselves in this truth, we can approach the start of the school year with a spirit of flexibility, grace and unwavering faith.

Practical Tips for Navigating the First Week

So how can educators, students and parents alike put this biblical wisdom into practice during the first week of school? Jamie and Timm offer the following practical tips:

  • Hold your plans loosely. Have a plan, but be willing to adjust and adapt when things inevitably go awry.
  • Respond, don't react. When faced with challenges or frustrations, take a deep breath and respond thoughtfully rather than reacting out of anger or frustration.
  • Focus on people, not perfection. Prioritize building relationships and connecting with your students, colleagues and community over trying to achieve an unrealistic "perfect" first week.
  • Lean on your support system. Reach out to trusted colleagues, administrators or even podcast hosts like Jamie and Timm when you need encouragement or prayer.
  • Be an example of grace. As a teacher, model patience, flexibility and trust in God's plan for your students and co-workers who may be struggling.
  • Bathe it in prayer. Spend time in God's Word and in prayer, asking Him to guide your steps and provide the wisdom, strength and peace you need.

Above all, Jamie and Timm emphasize the importance of maintaining an eternal perspective. While the first week of school may feel chaotic and overwhelming in the moment, we can take comfort in knowing that God is sovereignly working all things - even the unexpected curve balls - for our good and His glory.

As the new school year kicks off, may we approach it with open hands, trusting that the Lord "establishes our steps" (Proverbs 16:9) and that His plans for us are good, pleasing and perfect (Romans 12:2). Even when the first week doesn't go as planned, we can rest assured that God is still in control.
