Success isn’t what the world says it is. In this episode of Gospel & Gradebooks, Jamie and Timm expose five lies Satan tells men about success: your worth is in your work, money equals security, more hustle means more purpose, status proves manhood, and retirement is the finish line.
5 Lies Satan Tells Men About Success (and the Truth That Sets You Free)
Success. It’s a word that drives so much of what we do as men. We chase bigger paychecks, longer hours, fancier titles, and dream about the day we can finally kick back and “make it.”
But here’s the problem — most of what the world tells us about success is a lie. And behind those lies is an enemy who would love nothing more than to keep us exhausted, distracted, and discouraged.
In this episode of Gospel & Gradebooks, we expose five of Satan’s biggest lies about success — and share how God’s Word redefines what it means to win.
The 5 Lies About Success
1. Your Worth Is in Your Work
We live in a culture that measures a man by his job title and productivity. But Scripture says your value doesn’t come from what you produce — it comes from who you are in Christ (Ephesians 2:10).
When we tie our identity to our work, every bad day feels like a personal failure. God reminds us that we are His workmanship, not our company’s.
2. Money Equals Security
Money is a tool, not a savior. We share stories about seasons when we had plenty and seasons when we were scraping by — and in both, God provided exactly what we needed.
Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:19–21 to store up treasures in heaven, not on earth. True security isn’t in your bank account — it’s in God’s hands.
3. More Hustle Means More Purpose
It’s easy to think if we just work harder, we’ll finally feel fulfilled. But endless hustle leaves men burned out and empty.
Ecclesiastes 4:6 says, “Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.” Your purpose is found in Christ, not in the grind.
4. Status Proves Manhood
We all feel the pull to prove ourselves — through the car we drive, the house we buy, or the respect we get from others. But God doesn’t measure a man by his status.
Jesus Himself washed feet. True greatness is found in serving, not being served (Mark 10:43–45).
5. Retirement Is the Finish Line
So many men dream about the day they can “finally stop working.” But Scripture never calls us to coast. Our mission continues until we see Jesus face to face.
Paul said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). That’s the finish line we should run toward.
Our Challenge to You
Take five minutes this week and ask yourself: Which of these lies have I believed?
Write it down. Pray over it. Find a verse that speaks truth into that area and commit to living from that truth this week.
You don’t have to chase success the world’s way. You were made for something greater — for God’s glory, for His kingdom, and for a purpose that lasts beyond your last paycheck.
